The Western Victoria Region takes in the western third of the state, from Bass Strait to the Wimmera, and from Geelong to the South Australian border. Despite its broad rural areas, however, most of its votes are cast in the cities of Ballarat and Geelong and in outer western suburbs of Melbourne. Of the eleven lower-house seat that make up the Region, four are in the Geelong area (Bellarine, Geelong, Lara and South Barwon), two are in Ballarat (Buninyong and Wendouree) and one is in the Melbourne fringes (Melton). Only four are genuinely rural: Lowan, Polwarth, Ripon and South-West Coast. Politically, the Region is usually finely balanced, but in 2022 Labor won eight of the eleven lower house seats, leaving the Liberals with two and the Nationals one.
In 2022, the Region elected two Labor, two Liberals and one Green. With the abolition of the group ticket voting system, that is again the most likely reult in 2026, but if there is a big swing against Labor, the Liberals could win a third seat. It is also possible that One Nation could win a seat, from either Labor or the Liberals.
No Labor or One Nation candidates have yet been announced. I am assuming all sitting members are recontesting, unless they have announced they are retiring. Joe McCracken (Liberal) and Gayle Tierney (Labor) are retiring. McCracken is being replaced by the former MLA for Burwood, Graham Watt.
Sitting members:
Jacinta Ermacora (Labor): Elected 2022
Bev McArthur (Liberal): Elected 2018, 2022
Joe McCracken (Liberal): Elected 2022. Retiring 2026
Dr Sarah Mansfield (Greens): Elected 2022
Hon Gayle Tierney (Labor): Elected 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022. Retiring 2026
Macarthur is Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Shadow Minister for Local Government and Shadow Minister for Small Business.
