The Eastern Victoria Region extends from the Dandenong Ranges all the way to the tip of East Gippsland. But although it appears to be a largely rural Region, most of its voters live close to Melbourne. Of the eleven lower house seats that make up the Region, three are in other outer eastern suburbs (Evelyn, Gembrook and Monbulk), three are on the Mornington peninsula (Hastings, Mornington and Nepean), and one (Bass) includes the suburban growth centre of Pakenham. Morwell in the Latrobe Valley is also a largely urban seat. Only Gippsland East, Gippsland South and Narracan are genuinely rural seats. The Liberals hold four of the Assembly seats in the Region, Labor holds four (three of them very marginal) and the Nationals hold three.

At the 2022 election the Liberal-National Coalition won two seats, Labor won two seats and the Shooters won one seat. If there is a substantial swing to the Coalition, Labor will lose its second seat. As a result of the abolition of the group ticket voting system, the Shooters' Jeff Bourman will be defeated. The most likely result will be Coalition three, Labor one, Greens one, but One Nation could win a seat at the Coalition's expense.

No Labor or One Nation candidates have yet been announced. I am assuming all sitting members are recontesting, unless they have announced they are retiring. Harriet Shing (Labor) is retiring in 2026.

Sitting members:

  • Melina Bath (Nationals): Appointed 2015. Elected 2018, 2022
  • Jeff Bourman (Shooters): Elected 2014, 2018, 2022

  • Tom Mackintosh (Labor): Elected 2022
  • Harriet Shing (Labor): Elected 2014, 2018, 2022. Retiring 2026

Heath is Shadow Minister for Youth Justice and Shadow Minister for Crime Prevention and Victim Support.
