Melton was created in 1992, largely replacing the older seat of Derrimut. It originally took in a large area to the north-west of Melbourne, but rapid population growth in this area caused the seat to be cut back at successive redistributions, so that it now contains only the satellite town of Melton and some adjoining housing estates. The 2021 redistricting removed Bacchus Marsh, strengthening Labor's position.
Labor has won Melton at every election since its creation, usually by wide margins. But at the 2018 election Labor's majority dropped from 11.2% to 4.3%, making the seat highly marginal. It was widely predicted that Labor would lose Melton at the 2022 election, either to the Liberals or to an independent, Ian Birchall. In the event there was only a small swing against Labor, and Birchall polled only 9.1% of the vote. Labor won every booth in Melton town, some with more than 60% of the two-party vote.
David Cunningham won Melton in 1992, having preveiouslly held Derrimut from 1985 to 1992. He retired in 1999 and was succeeded by Don Nardella, who had previously served in the Legislative Council. Following controversy over his expenses, Nardella was forced to retire in 2018. His replacement was Steve McGhie, state secretary of the Ambulance Employees' Association. McGhie was Parliamentary Secretary for Health in the Andrews government. He will retire at the 2026 election. Despite Labor's better-than-expected result in 2022, this seat will still be at risk if there is a substantial swing against Labor in 2026.
