Geelong was created in 1856, as a multi-member seat, becoming a single-member seat in 1904. In 1967 it was divided into Geelong East, North and South, then reunited in 1985 (Geelong East is now Bellarine and Geelong North is now Lara). It has been won by both Labor and Liberal at various times, but since 1999 it has become much stronger for Labor. Recent members: Hayden Shell (Labor) 1985-92, Ann Henderson (Liberal) 1992-99, Ian Trezise (Labor) 1999-2014, Christine Couzens (Labor) since 2014. The 2021 redistricting extended it into rural areas as far as Bannockburn, without weakening Labor's position.
