Lowan was created in 1889, abolished in 1945 and re-created in 1955. It was renamed Wimmera in 1992 but reverted to Lowan in 2002. It covers the Wimmera and parts of the Western District, thinly populated but highly productive agricultural areas. Like all country seats, it has a very low proportion of people born overseas, of graduates and of high-income households. Lowan has the largest area of any Victorian electorate. It is reliably conservative and has never come close to electing a Labor member. Recent members, all Nationals: Bill McGrath 1979-99, Hugh Delahunty 1999-2014, Emma Kealy from 2014.
