Lara was created in 2002, when the seat of Geelong North, created in 1967, was renamed. Despite its new name, most of its votes are still cast in the working-class northern suburbs of Geelong. It has a very low level of professionals, graduates and high-income households. Not surprisingly, it is one of Labor's safest seats and has never elected a Liberal member. Members have been Neil Trezise 1967-92, Peter Loney 1992-2006, John Eren 2006-22 and Ella George since 2022.
