Gippsland East was created in 1889, and its boundaries have changed very little since. Like all country seats, it has a very low proportion of people born overseas, of graduates and of high-income households, and the lowest median household income of any seat in Victoria. It has always been a conservative seat, and has never come close to electing a Labor member. It has been held continuously by the Country Party / Nationals since 1920, except for the years 1999-2010, when it elected an independent. Recent members: Bruce Evans (Country / Nationals) 1961-92, David Treasure (Nationals) 1992-99, Craig Ingram (Independent) 1999-2010, Tim Bull (Nationals) since 2010. Bull is retiring in 2026
