Gippsland South was created in 1859, and like Gippsland East has remained essentially unchanged since. Like all country seats, it has a very low proportion of people born overseas, of graduates and of high-income households. It has always been a very conservative area and has never elected a Labor member. The Country Party / Nationals have held it since 1927. The party's long-time leader Sir Herbert Hyland held the seat for 41 years. Recent members: Tom Wallace 1982-92, Peter Ryan 1992-2015, Danny O'Brien since 2015. Ryan was Deputy Premier 2010-14.
