Narracan was created in 1967, taking in rural western Gippsland and country towns town like Drouin and Warragul, which are rapidly suburbanising. Like all country seats, it has a very low proportion of people born overseas, of graduates and of high-income households. It has generally been a reliable Liberal seat, except in 1999 when it joined the regional revolt against the Kennett government. Recent members have been John Delzoppo (Liberal) 1982-96, Florian Andrighetto (Liberal) 1996-99, Ian Maxfield (Labor) 1999-2006, Gary Blackwood (Liberal) 2006-22, and Wayne Farnham (Liberal) since 2022.
