Evelyn was created in 1859, and has always occupied a block of territory to the north-east of Melbourne, partly rural and partly outer suburban. It has a high proportion of young families paying off mortgages. It has usually been a safe conservative seat, but Labor has won it three times, most recently in the Bracks landslide of 2002. Recent members: Max McDonald (Labor) 1982-85, Sid Plowman (Liberal) 1985-99, Christine Fyffe (Liberal) 1999-2002, Heather McTaggart (Labor) 2006-10, Fyffe again 2006-18, Bridget Vallence (Liberal) since 2018.
