The Northern Metropolitan Region extends from the central business district to the outer northern fringes of Melbourne at Wallan and Wollert. It falls into two distinct regions. The southern region is a densely-populated, affluent and multi-cultural area, with formerly working-class areas such as Brunswick and Northcote now colonised by wealthy professionals. The northern region is also multi-cultural, but largely working-class. Not surprisingly, therefore, Northern Metropolitan is the most left-wing of the eight regions. Labor holds eight of the eleven Assembly seats, most by wide margins. The Greens hold Brunswick, Melbourne and Richmond.
At the 2022 election, Labor won two seats, and the Liberals and Greens one each. The fifth seat seat (previously held by Fiona Patten of the Reason Party) went to the expelled former Labor MLC Adem Somyurek (who previously sat for Southweastern Metro), representing the Democratic Labour Party. He left the DLP in 2024 and sat as in independent. If there is a swing against Labor, and with the abolition of the group ticket system, it is likely that the fifth seat will go to the Liberals.
No Labor candidates have yet been announced. I am assuming all sitting members are recontesting, unless they have announced they are retiring. Somyurek will not recontest in 2026.
