Mornington was created in 1859, named for the county, not the bayside town, which was then barely a village. It was abolished in 1967. A new Mornington, named for the fast-growing town, was created in 1985. It is a fairly affluent area, particularly around Mount Eliza, and popular with retirees. It has generally been a safe Liberal seat, although it was nearly lost to an independent in 2022. Members have been Robert Cooper (Liberal) 1985-2006, David Morris (Liberal) 2006-22, Chris Crewther (Liberal) since 2022.
