Essendon was created in 1904. It was renamed Pascoe Vale in 1955 but reverted to Essendon in 1958. The area is a middle-class, and strongly Catholic, pocket in the otherwise working-class western suburbs. It is a stable, affluent, home-owning population, with no significant ethnic minorities. It has usually been a Labor seat, but DLP preferences kept it in Liberal hands from 1958 to 1979. Recent members: Sir Kenneth Wheeler (Liberal) 1958-79, Barry Rowe (Labor) 1979-92, George Davis (Liberal) 1992-96, Judy Maddigan (Labor) 1996-2010, Justin Madden (Labor) 2010-14, Danny Pearson (Labor) since 2014. Pearson was a minister in the Andrews and Allan governments. He will retire in 2026.
