Melbourne was created in 1856 as a multi-member seat. In 1859 it was split up into Melbourne East, North and West. It was re-created as a single-member seat in 1889. Labor first won it in 1908, and then held it for 106 years. In recent times it has undergone rapid demographic change, and what was once a working-class seat has been largely repopulated by wealthy professionals. As a result it fell to the Greens in 2014. Recent members have been Keith Remington (Labor) 1977-88, Neil Cole (Labor) 1988-99, Bronwyn Pike (Labor) 1999-2012, Jennifer Kanis (Labor) 2012-14, and Ellen Sandell (Greens) since 2013.
