Sitting member: Nathan Lambert (Labor): Elected 2022

2018 Labor majority over Greens: 20.7%
2021 redistricting: Labor majority over Greens 21.2%
2022 Labor majority over Greens: 02.1%

Status: Very safe Labor versus Liberals, vulnerable to Greens

Preston was created in 1945, and until 2022 was a safe Labor seat. It is still largely a working-clas seat, with a strong Greek and Italian presence. At the 2022 election Labor's margin over the Greens was cut to 2.1%, mainly because a popular independent, former Darebin mayor Gaetano Greco, running on local issues such as the future of Preston Market, polled 13.7% and directed his preferences to the Greens. The Greens are strongest in Preston, in the southern part of the seat, while Labor still dominates northern areas like Keon Park and Ruthven. Members (all Labor): Carl Kirkwood 1970-88, Michael Leighton 1988-2006, Robin Scott 2006-22, Nathan Lambert since 2022. Lambert will need to work hard to hold this increasingly difficult seat.
