Thomastown was created in 1985, in Melbourne's fast-growing outer northern suburbs. It has a high proportion of young families paying off mortgages, and also a large Indian-Australian community. It has always been a very safe Labor seat, and remains so despite an 11.2% swing at the 2022 election. Members, all Labor, have been Beth Gleeson 1985-89, Peter Batchelor 1990-2010, and Bronwyn Halfpenny since 2010.
