    Western Metropolitan Region

The Western Metropolitan Region takes in a swathe of Melbourne suburbs west and north-west of the city centre, extending from Footscray and Williamstown in the inner city area out as far as Werribee in the south-west and Sunbury in the north-west. Although there are some middle-class pockets, notably in Essendon, this is overwhelmingly a working-class area. It is also highly multi-cultural. Since World War II it has been settled by successive waves of immigrants, first from eastern and southern Europe, then from Asia (particularly from Vietnam), and more recently from India and Africa.

Not surprisingly, this Region is Labor's heartland. In 2006 Labor won three of the five seats - and came very close to winning four - leaving one to the Liberals and one to the Greens. In 2010 the Liberals gained a second seat at Labor's expense, but in 2014 they lost this seat to the Democratic Labour Party (which polled 2.5% of the vote), thanks to complex preference arrangements. The DLP member, Dr Rachel Carling-Jenkins, later left the DLP and in 2018 will be standing for Werribee as an independent. Both Labor and Liberals will be hoping to reclaim her seat. The Labor member Khalil Eideh is also retiring.
