Altona District
Altona was created in 1991 in Melbourne's fast-growing outer western suburbs. It has been little changed by
subsequent redistributions. It has a young population, and a high proportion of families with dependent childen
paying mortgages. Many of them are recent immigrants from India and other Asian countries, taking advantage of
the areas's relatively cheap housing.
Altona has always been a safe Labor seat, being retained even in the face of the 1992 landslide Liberal victory.
Lynne Kosky won the seat in 1996 and was a minister in the Bracks and Bumbly governments. She resigned for family
reasons in 2010, and the by-election was won for Labor by Jill Hennessy, who has held the seat since.
Jill Hennessy, Labor MLA for Altona since 2010, was a solicitor and public servant before entering politics.
She was also a Senior Adviser to Premier Steve Bracks. She was elected to the shadow cabinet after the 2010
election and has been Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services since December 2014.
The Liberal candidate in 2018 is Christian Martinu, an Environmental Health Officer.
