South-Eastern Metropolitan Region
The South-Eastern Metropolitan Region takes in Melbourne suburbs radiating to the south and south-east of the
city, including the bayside suburbs from Mentone to Frankston, and the fast-growing outer south-east
centered on Dandenong, Narre Warren, Berwick and Cranbourne. It is generally a low-income area, taking in the
manufacturing corridor that runs from Clayton to Dandenong, and is also a settlement centre for immigrants from
Vietnam, Cambodia, India and other Asian countries.
Labor has become increasingly dominant in this area as population density has increased. Of the
eleven lower-house seats that make up the Region, the Liberals hold only Rowville on the northern edge of
the Region. At the 2014 election they lost Carrum, Frankston and Mordialloc to Labor. At the 2006 and 2010
state elections, Labor won three seats to the Liberals' two in this Region, but at the 2014 election Labor
lost a seat to the Greens. Labor will be hoping to retake this seat in 2018.
Gavin Jennings was a minister throughout the Bracks and Brumby governments. He is now Leader of the
Government in the Legislative Council and Special Minister of State. Adem Somyurek was Minister for Small
Business, Innovation and Trade in 2014-2015, but resigned after allegations of bullying in his office.
Gordon Rich-Phillips was a minister in the Baillieu-Napthine government and is now Shadow Assistant Treasurer and
Shadow Minister for Government Administration and for Aviation.
