Western Victoria Region
The Western Victoria Region takes in the western third of the state, from Bass Strait to the Wimmera, and from Geelong to the
South Australian border. Despite its broad rural areas, however, most of its votes are cast in the cities of Ballarat and Geelong and in
outer western suburbs of Melbourne. Of the eleven lower-house seat that make up the Region, four are in the Geelong area (Bellarine,
Geelong, Lara and South Barwon), two are in Ballarat (Buninyong and Wendouree) and one is in the Melbourne fringes (Melton). Only
four are genuinely rural: Lowan, Polwarth, Ripon and South-West Coast.
Politically, the Region is finely balanced. In 2014, Labor won six of the eleven lower house seats, the Liberals four and the
Nationals one. In 2006, the Region elected two Labor, two Liberal and one DLP member. In 2010 the DLP seat was won by the Nationals,
giving the Coalition three seats. In 2014, the Nationals lost their seat to a group called Vote 1 Local Jobs, which polled 1.3% of
the vote, thanks to complex preference deals among the parties. At this election the Vote 1 Local Jobs member is contesting the lower
house seat of South-West Coast, and both Labor and the Nationals will be hoping to win his seat.
Jaala Pulford has been Minister for Agriculture and Minister for Regional Development since 2014. Gayle Tierney has been
Minister for Training and Skills and Minister for Corrections since November 2016.
