Warrandyte was created in 1976, in the affluent outer eastern suburbs. It has a high proportion of young families paying off mortgages, and also a large Chinese-Australian community. It has generally been a safe Liberal seat, although Labor won it in the Cain landslide election in 1982. Members have been Norman Lacy (Liberal) 1976-82, Lou Hill (Labor) 1982-88, Phil Honeywood (Liberal) 1988-2002, Ryan Smith (Liberal) 2006-23, and Nicole Werner (Liberal), since the 2023 by-election.
