Murray Plains was created in 2014, when the old seats of Rodney (based on Echuca) and Swan Hill were abolished. Rodney had existed since 1856, Swan Hill since 1904. This area has been dominated by the Country Party / Nationals since the 1920s. Like all country seats, it has a very low proportion of people born overseas, of graduates and of high-income households. Peter Walsh won Swan Hill in 2002 and transferred to Murray Plains in 2022. He was leader of the Nationals 2014-24.
