Malvern was created in 1945, in one of the wealthiest parts of Melbourne, and has been held by six Liberal members in succession since then. Four of the six have been Liberal leaders, and one, Lindsay Thompson, has been Premier. Recent members: Geoff Leigh 1982-92, Robert Doyle 1992-2006 (Liberal leader 2002-06), Michael O'Brien since 2006 (Liberal leader 2018-21). O'Brien is retiring in 2026. The new Liberal candidate will be Amelia Hamer, great-niece of Premier Dick Hamer.
