Eltham District
Eltham was created in 1992, partly replacing the old seat of Greensborough. Once a semi-rural retreat for
artists and writers, Eltham is now a middle-class suburb. The seat also includes fringe-urban areas such as Briar Hill
and Research. Eltham itself votes solidly Labor, but the Liberals have some strength in areas further out such as
Research.
Greensborough was a highly marginal seat in the 1970s, but Eltham has only changed hands once since it was
created. It was won by Wayne Phillips, a
Liberal, in 1992, and he held it until the Bracks landslide in 2002, when he was defeated by Labor's Steve Herbert. In
2014 Herbert transferred to the Legislative Council and was succeeded in Eltham by Vicki Ward.
Vicki Ward, Labor MLA for Eltham since 2014, was a staffer for the local federal MP Jenny Macklin before her
election. She has been Parliamentary Secretary for Industry and Employment since November 2016. The Liberal candidate
is Nick McGowan, a former adviser to Jeff Kennett and public affairs officer for the UN, whose current occupation is not stated.
The Greens candidate is Matthew Goodman, a cheesemaker.
