Eildon District
Eildon was created at the 2014 redistricting, replacing the abolished seat of Seymour - although it doesn't
contain the town of Seymour, which is now in Euroa. The seat combines High Country towns such as Alexandra and
Mansfield with the north-eastern fringe of Melbourne, including Healesville, Launching Place, Warburton and Yarra Glen.
Some of these areas are growing rapidly due to suburban encroachment. The rural towns generally vote Liberal, some by wide
margins. The towns closer to Melbourne are more marginal, with Warburton being strongly Labor.
Seymour was held through the Kennett government years by Marie Tehan, a minister in the Kennett government. When she
retired in 1999, the seat went to Labor's Ben Hardman. He was defeated in 2010 by the Liberal Cindy McLeish, who
transferred to the new seat of Eildon on 2014.
Cindy McLeish, Liberal MLA for Seymour 2010-14 and for Euroa since 2014, was a teacher, psychologist and
CEO of Women's Golf Victoria before entering politics. She is now Shadow Assistant Minister for Environment, Communities and
Volunteers. The Labor candidate is Sally Brennan, CEO of the Upper Yarra Community House. The Greens candidate Ken
Deacon is a teacher. With a margin of 3.8%, Eildon is a winnable seat for Labor in the event of a big swing to the
government.
