Division of Gellibrand
Gellibrand was created in 1949, occupying a block of Melbourne's working-class western suburbs, based on Footscray and
Williamstown. Successive redistributions have extended it westwards into newer suburban areas, without much changing its
political character. The seat, or at least the part nearer the city of Melbourne, is now changing from being a working-class
Labor seat to being an inner-city multicultural Labor seat, as shown by the relatively high income level, the high
proportion of non English speaking households and the fairly high proportion in professional and managerial occupations.
This combination is always an indicator of Labor strength.
Members for Gellibrand have included Ralph Willis, Treasurer in the Keating government, and Nicola Roxon, a senior
minister in the Rudd-Gillard Government. Roxon retired in 2013.
Tim Watts, Labor member for Gellibrand since 2013, was a solicitor, a ministerial adviser and a manager at Telstra
before his election. The 2018 redistribution has extended the seat further to the west, while removing the Labor
stronghold of Sunshine. This has reduced the Labor majority, but Gellibrand is still a safe Labor seat. The Greens polled
21.5% at the 2016 election, but the new boundaries will be less favourable to them.
The Liberal candidate is Anthony Mitchell, a business consultant. The Greens candidate is Bernadette Thomas, a high-school teacher.
