Division of Hawke
The division of Hawke was created by the 2021 redistribution, from parts of the old seats of
Ballarat,
Gorton and
McEwen. It takes in
the fast-growing urban fringe areas along the Calder and Western Highways running north-west and west, respectively, from Melbourne. Its
largest centres are Melton and Bacchus Marsh to the west and Sunbury to the north-west. These were quiet country towns until 30 years ago,
but are now urban centres: Melton with 72,000 people, Sunbury with 36,000 and Bacchus Marsh with 22,000.
Until fairly recently a seat on these boundaries would have been safely Liberal, but with the rapid growth of low-income housing in
these urban fringe communities, Hawke was expected to have a comfortable Labor majority. The Labor vote is concentrated in Melton,
where Labor polls well over 60% of the two-party vote in every booth. The Liberals have some strength in Sunbury and some fringe rural areas.
Sam Rae, Labor MP for Hawke since 2022, has an MBA from Melbourne Business School.
He was an advisor to Senator Stephen Conroy, and State Secretary and
Campaign Director of Victorian Labor from 2016 to 2020.
