Werribee was created in 1976. It was renamed Tarneit in 2002 but reverted to Werribee in 2014. It elected a Liberal in 1976, but since then has always been a fairly safe Labor seat. Over the past 40 years Werribee has grown from a small country town to a satellite city with 50,000 residents. It has recently become a settlement centre for Indian and African immigrants. Recent members (all Labor): Dr Ken Coghill 1979-96, Mary Douglas (later Gillett) 1996-2006, Tim Pallas 2014-25 (he sat for Tarneit 2006-14), and John Lister since the 2025 by-election. Pallas, who was Treasurer in the Andrews government, was thought to be in danger at the 2022 election, but in fact gained a swing to Labor. When he resigned in 2025, Labor very nearly lost the resultant by-election to a local independent.
