Williamstown is one of only three seats that have existed continuously since 1856 (the others are Brighton and Richmond). Although Williamstown itself is a wealthy area popular with graduates and professionals, the seat is kept safe for Labor by working-class voters in Altona, Newport and Spotswood. Labor has held Williamstown continuously since 1904. John Lemmon, who held it from 1904 to 1955, remains the longest-serving Victorian MP. Two Labor Premiers, Joan Kirner and Steve Bracks, have held the seat. Recent members (all Labor): Gordon Stirling 1973-88, Joan Kirner 1988-94, Steve Bracks 1994-2007, Wade Noonan 2007-2018, Melissa Horne since 2018.
