St Albans was created in 1985, abolished in 1992, and re-created in 2014. The seat is in the heart of the working-class and multicultural western suburbs, and has always been a safe Labor seat. It is the centre of Melbourne's large Vietnamese-Australian community, and has the second-lowest (after Broadmeadows) median household income of any seat in Melbourne. It was held by Alex Andrianopoulos during its first incarnation, and has been held by Natalie Suleyman since 2014. At the 2022 election she suffered a 12.4% swing, the biggest against a sitting Labor member in the state.
