Ivanhoe was created in 1945, and until the 1980s it was a fairly reliable Liberal seat, electing a Labor member only in 1952. It is a diverse seat: Ivanhoe itself is very affluent, while Heidelberg and Macleod are low-income areas. For a Labor-held seat seat it has a high proportion of graduates and profeessionals. Since 1982 the seat has becoming increasingly secure for Labor, and it hasn't elected a Liberal since the Kennett landslide of 1992. Recent members: Tony Sheehan (Labor) 1982-85, Vince Heffernan (Liberal) 1985-96, Craig Langdon (Labor) 1996-2010, Anthony Carbines (Labor) since 2010.
