Footscray was created in 1877, abolished in 1904 and re-created in 1927. It has always been a working-class seat, although it is now being gentrified. It has also become heavily multi-cultural, with waves of European, Vietnamese and most recently African immigrants. Labor has held it continously since 1927, but Labor is now under threat from the Greens. The 2021 redistricting removed the western parts of the seat (Braybrook and Sunshine), and added more inner-city areas such as Seddon and Yarraville. This has rendered the seat less multi-cultural than was shown in the 2021 census, and weakened Labor's position relative to the Greens. Recent members: Bob Fordham 1970-92, Bruce Mildenhall 1992-2006, Marsha Thomson 2006-18, Katie Hall since 2018.
