Dandenong was created in 1904, when the area was semi-rural and Dandenong was a country town. It is now the commercial and industrial centre of Melbourne's sprawling south-eastern suburbs: the City of Greater Dandenong has 158,000 residents. The area is heavily multi-cultural and mostly working-class, with substantial Indian and Chinese communities. Not surprisingly, Labor has held the seat continuously since 1969. At the 2022 election it was Labor's safest seat in two-party terms. Recent members: Rob Jolly (1979-85), Terry Norris (1985-92), John Pandazopoulos (1992-2014), Gabrielle Williams (since 2014). In July 2026 Williams was elected Deputy Leader of the Labor Party.
