Clarinda was created in 2014 when the seat of Clayton was renamed. It is the heartland of Melbourne's large eastern suburbs Indochinese community. It is also attracting immigrants from India. It was won in 2014 by Hong Lim, who had held Clayton since 1996. Lim retired in 2018 and was succeeded by Meng Heang Tak. Both are of Cambodian-Chinese descent.
