Bundoora was created in 1976, in the fast-growing northern working-class suburbs of Melbourne. Today this area is still largely working-class, but has a stable, home-owning ageing population.
Bundoora has been held by Labor since its creation. Its first member was John Cain, son of the three-times Labor Premier John Cain senior. Cain became Leader of the Opposition in 1981 and Premier in 1982, serving until his resignation in 1990. He retired in 1992 and was succeeded by Sherryl Garbutt, member for the abolished seat of Greensborough. She was a minister in the Bracks government, and retired in 2006.
Colin Brooks, Labor MLA for Bundoora since 2006, was an electrical tradesman before entering politics. He also worked as an electorate officer and ministerial adviser. He was Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2022 and has been a minister since the 2022 election.
