Yan Yean District
Yan Yean was created in 1992, on the fast-growing northern fringes of Melbourne, in roughly the southern
half of the old seat of Whittlesea. Subsequent redistrictings have cut it back to the area running from Diamond
Creek to Wallan, centred on Whittlesea, once a country town but now an outer suburb. This is an area of new
suburban subdivisions and young families buying homes, and is one of the fastest-growing seats in the state.
When it was created Yan Yean had a Labor majority of 8%. Labor's Andre Haermeyer did well to retain it in the Kennett
landslide of 1992. He went to become a minister in the Bracks government. The 2002 redistricting made Yan Yean a
nationally Liberal seat, and Haermeyer shifted to the new safe seat of Kororoit. He was succeeded in Yan Yean by
Danielle Green, who easily retained it in the Bracks landslide, and has held it since. She was on the Opposition
front-bench 2010-14, but missed out on a spot in the Andrews Ministry. She is now Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism
and Major Events and Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Victoria.
The Liberal candidate was Meralyn Klein, a former Nillumbik City councillor. On 15 November the Liberal Party
disendorsed her over her appearance in anti-Muslim social media posts. She will still appear on the ballot-paper as a
Liberal candidate. The Greens candidate is Hugh McKinnon, an engineer.
