Niddrie was created in 1976, when the old seat of Moonee Ponds was abolished. It is a more affluent area than most of the western suburbs, and has the state's highest proportion of Christians (mainly Catholics). It has been a reliably Labor seat. Members, all Labor: Jack Simpson 1976-88, Bob Sercombe 1988-96, Rob Hulls 1996-2012, Ben Carroll since 2012. Hulls was Deputy Premier in the Brumby government.
Carroll was in Cabinet from 2017, and in 2023 became Deputy Premier in the Allan government. In July 2016, on the resignation of Allan, Carroll was elected Leader of the Labor Party and became Premier.
