Kew was created in 1927, in what was then and still is one of the wealthiest parts of Melbourne. It has among the highest levels of graduates, professionals and high-inco0me households of any seat in Victoria. It also has a substantial Chinese-Ausrtralian population. Kew has elected a Liberal member at every election since the party was founded in 1945. It was held by Premier Sir Rupert (Dick) Hamer from 1971 to 1981. Members since then have been Pru Sibree 1981-88, Jan Wade 1988-99, Andrew McIntosh 1999-2014, Tim Smith 2014-22, and Jess Wilson since 2022. Smith ended his own career through a drunk-driving episode, opening the way for Wilson, who became Liberal leader in 2025 after only three years in Parliament.
