Berwick was created in 1976, abolished in 2002, and re-created at the 2021 redistricting, taking in much of the abolished seat of Gembrook. The town of Berwick has grown rapidly as Melbourne's suburban sprawl has spread to the south-east. In the 1960s Berwick had 2,000 people, today it has 50,000. It is mostly a fairly affluent middle-class and Liberal-voting area, although Labor has some strength in the southern part of Berwick. It has a high level of households paying off mortgages
The earlier seat of Berwick was held by Liberal members Rob McClellan from 1976 to 1992 and Robert Dean from 1992 to 2002. The new Berwick was won in 2022 by Brad Battin, who had previously been member for the abolished seat of Gembrook, which he won in 2010.
Battin, a former police officer and business operator, was a shadow minister from 2014 to 2021, when he resigned after unsuccessfully challenging Michael O'Brien for the Liberal leadership. He contested the leadership again after the 2022 election, but was defeated by John Pesutto. After Pesutto was forced out of the leadership in December 2024, Battin was elected leader, but he made no impact on the Labor government and resigned in November 2025, being succeeded by Jess Wilson.
