Ivanhoe District
Ivanhoe was created in 1945, taking in a large area in what were then the outer northern suburbs of Melbourne.
Subsequent redistrictings cut it back to an area of middle-class suburbia along the north bank of the Yarra from Ivanhoe
to Plenty. On these boundaries it was a safe Liberal seat. The 1992 redistricting shifted the seat westwards to take in
parts of Heidelberg, a low-income Labor-voting area. This made the seat marginal. Labor won it in 1996 and has held it
since.
Craig Langdon held the seat for Labor until 2010, when he was disendorsed and succeeded by Anthony Carbines.
Langdon contested the 2014 election as an independent and is standing again at this election.
Anthony Carbines, Labor MLA for Ivanhoe since 2010, was a journalist and staffer to Bronwyn Pike before
entering politics, and was also a Banyule City councillor. He is the son of Elaine Carbines, Labor MLC for Geelong
1999-2006. He has been Parliamentary Secretary for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, and for Water, since July 2016.
The Liberal candidate is Monica Clark, a lawyer and small business owner.
The Greens candidate is Andrew Conley, whose occupation is not stated. Despite the modest Labor majority, Ivanhoe seems
to be safe for Labor at this election.
