Statistics and history
Gellibrand was created in 1949, occupying a block of Melbourne's working-class western suburbs, based on Footscray and Williamstown. Successive redistributions have extended it westwards into newer suburban areas, without much changing its political character. The seat, or at least the part nearer the city of Melbourne, is now changing from being a working-class Labor seat to being an inner-city multicultural Labor seat, as shown by the relatively high income level, the high proportion of people born in non English speaking countries and the fairly high proportion in professional occupations. This combination is always an indicator of Labor strength.
Members for Gellibrand have included Ralph Willis, Treasurer in the Keating government, and Nicola Roxon, a senior minister in the Rudd- Gillard Government, who retired in 2013.
Tim Watts, Labor member for Gellibrand since 2013, was a solicitor, a ministerial adviser and a manager at Telstra before his election. He has made an impression since his election as a champion of issues relating to domestic violence, and can expect promotion. His Liberal opponent in 2016 is Ben Willis, who "works in human resources."
