Ashwood was created at the 2021 redistricting, when the seats of Burwood and Mount Waverley were abolished. Based on the demographic profile of Burwood at the 2021 census, it is a high-income area with a high proportion of home-owners and graduates. It has a significant Chinese-Australian community. Burwood was the seat of Liberal Premier Jeff Kennett. Ashwood was won in 2022 by Matt Fregon, who won Mount Waverley from the Liberals in 2018. Will Fowles, who won Burwood in 2018, contested Ringwood in 2022. Labor's strength lies in Burwood and Chadstone, while Glen Iris remains Liberal.
