  • Macquarie has existed since Federation, and from 1901 to 1977 it was a regional seat based on Bathurst, Australia's oldest inland city. On these
boundaries it was a Labor seat more often than not - its most distinguished member was Labor Prime Minister Ben Chifley. The 1977 redistribution
made it a Blue Mountains and Penrith seat, and the 1984 redistribution removed Penrith and added the Hawkesbury, a strong Liberal area. The 2007
redistribution turned it back into a Bathurst-based seat, but the 2010 redistribution reversed this change.

Macquarie has a high level of median family income and a fairly high proportion of people in professional occupations, reflecting the popularity of
the Blue Mountains and the Hawkesbury for affluent exurbanites. It also had fairly high levels of families with dependent children and of dwellings
being purchased, making it to some extent a mortgage belt seat. The Liberals dominate the Hawkesbury area around Richmond and Windsor, while Labor's
strength is in the Blue Mountainstowns such as Katoomba and Springwood.

Kerry Bartlett won Richmond in 1996 and was Government Whip in the Howard Government. The 2007 redistribution rendered his position hopeless and he
was defeated by Bob Debus, a former long-serving state MP and minister. He was a minister in the first Rudd government, but following the 2010
redistribution he retired, and the seat went to Louise Markus, who had been elected for Greenway in 2004.

Louise Markus, Liberal MP for Greenway from 2004 to 2010 and for Macquarie since 2010, is a former social worker, counsellor and TAFE teacher. She
was a member of the Opposition Shadow minister from 2007 to 2010 but has not been promoted since during the Abbott- Turnbull Government.

Macquarie's boundaries have not been changed by the 2016 redistribution. The Labor candidate is Susan Templeman, a former journalist who runs a media
training consultancy. She is having her third tilt at this seat.
