Statistics and history
Eden-Monaro has existed since Federation, and has always occupied the south-eastern corner of NSW. For most of its history it was a seat based on farming,
fishing and timber, but the growth of the Canberra dormitory town of Queanbeyan means that today the largest employment sector is government employment
(20.3%), while only 6.3% of the population work in agriculture - fewer than the 10% who work in tourism. Nevertheless the electorate is still sensitive to
rural issues, and will be even more so on its new boundaries, which take in rual areas around Tumut and Yass.
Eden-Monaro was usually a safe conservative seat until 1943, when it was won for Labor by Allan Fraser, who held it until his defeat in 1966, and again from
1969 to 1972. This is one of the few country seats where Labor's base vote has held up, and since 1972 it has always been held by a government member. Gary
Nairn won the seat for the Liberals in 1996, and was a minister in the Howard government. He was defeated in 2007 by Dr Mike Kelly, a former Australian Army
officer and lawyer with a distinguished record. Kelly was a minister in the Rudd-Gillard government, but was defeated in 2013.
Dr Peter Hendy, Liberal MP for Eden-Monaro since 2013, has extensive experience in government and business, most recently as Chief Executive of the
Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He was previously a senior public servant, and served as chief of staff to Defence Minister Peter Reith and
Opposition Leader Dr Brendan Nelson. In 2015 he was one of the organisers of Malcolm Turnbull's party- room coup against Tony Abbott, and was subsequently
appointed Assistant Minister for Productivity. In February 2016 he became Assistant Minister for Finance.
Dr Mike Kelly, who will recontest Eden-Monaro for Labor, was an Australian Army officer for 20 years until 2007, serving in Iraq and Somalia, and has a PhD
in international law. He has campaigned continuously since his defeat in 2013, and this will partly offset the advantage of incumbency that Hendy will enjoy
after three years. But the 2016 redistribution has improved the seat for the Liberals by extending it westwards into Liberal or National voting rural areas.
The new notional Liberal margin is 2.9%. Nevertheless this is still a seat Labor will be hoping to regain.
