The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was created in 1983,
replacing an earlier entity called the Turkish Federated State of
Cyprus, created in 1975 following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in
1974. It is recognised only by Turkey. The United Nations, the
United States, the EU and Australia continue to recognise the
sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus over the whole of Cyprus.
