In October 1971 Park declared himself "President for life" and
thereafter ruled as a dictator. Following his assassination in 
1979, there was a brief period of civilian rule, followed by 
another coup led by General Chun Doo-hwan. Chun ruled as a dictator 
until 1987, when he was succeeded by General Roh Tae-woo. Under
domestic and international pressure, Roh agreed to allow free 
presidential elections in December 1987.
