Israeli law provides for the direct election of the Prime
Minister simultaneously with the election of the Knesset
(Parliament). Prime Minister Ehud Barak was elected in 
May 1999 for a four-year term. His resignation in 
December 2000 triggered a fresh Prime Ministerial 
election but not a new Knesset election.
