After 40 years as a Communist dictatorship, the German Democratic
Republic held its first and last free elections in March 1990, a
few months after the opening of the Berlin Wall and the resignation
of the Communist regime. At issue was whether the DDR would be 
wound up immediately and absorbed into the Federal Republic, or
continue to exist in some sort of German federation, preserving at
least some aspects of its socialist system. Parties favouring 
immediate unification won a large majority.
