UNION OF BURMA LEGISLATIVE ELECTIONS OF 27 MAY 1990 =================================================================== Elections to the People's Assembly Source: The Online Burma Library In May 1989 the ruling military junta in Burma, the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC), decreed that elections would be held for the People's Assembly (Pyithu Hluttaw). These were held on 27 May 1990 and were generally held to be free and fair. The elections were won with a commanding majority by the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by the democratic opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Apparently taken aback that their favoured party had polled so poorly, the SLORC refused to recognise the results of the election, and the Assembly was not allowed to convene. The NLD was banned and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under housed arrest, where she remained until May 2002.
