A two-party system has existed since the 1910 elections, but preferential voting was not introduced until 1918. The two-party prefered majorities for 1910-17 are thus hypothetical. 2. Majorities are expressed in terms of ALP vote-share. Thus a two- party majority of 1% for the ALP appears as 51.0, while a two-party majority of 1% for the Liberal-National coalition parties appears as 49%. 3. These figures are estimates for elections before 1984, when a full count-out was introduced. They have been corrected to allow for uncontested elections before 1958. 4. The table shows that the ALP has lost five elections at which it obtained more than 50% of the two-party vote: 1913, 1954, 1961, 1969 and 1998, while the non-ALP parties have lost one such election: 1990. --------------------------------------------------------------------
